THE world’s most talked about QB2 will finally get his chance. After three and half seasons behind Tom Brady, the San Fransisco 49ers went all in on the talented 26-year old trading their second-round draft pick next year for him. Garoppolo was long expected to take the reigns of New England once Tom Brady retired, but considering Tom Brady is a robot and plans to play until he is 84 he was moved on. Time to shine Jimmy G.

I’VE seen a lot of people giving New England flak for dealing Garoppolo. They entered the season with two young promising back up quarterbacks and now they have none. They traded Jacoby Brissett at the start of the year to the Colts and now Garoppolo, meaning if something happens to Brady or he shows signs of decline there is no clear future option on the roster anymore. When the 49ers acquired Garoppolo they released former Patriot Brian Hoyer, who has since signed a three-year deal to take on the back up duties in New England though.

WHAT a lot of people might not have factored into the Pats decision is Garoppolo’s contract situation. He is slated to become a free agent at the end of this season. Even though he only has 17 games to his name he will likely demand a high salary and New England wasn’t prepared to pay both he and Brady a substantial amount. The 49ers on the other hand now position themselves in a flexible scenario. They can resign him if they like what they see in the next eight games, or if they really want to do so and he demands a kings ransom they can let him walk.

IT’S unlikely that he won’t be in 49ers colours next season, with San Fran opting to snare a key piece in their rebuild at Tuesday’s deadline. If they have their starting quarterback now, they can focus on the future and replace the necessary players around him to build their team back up to relevance. San Fransisco had long been linked to Redskins QB Kirk Cousins who has spent the last two seasons under the franchise tag as well as the top quarterback prospects in the draft. Instead, they seem to have gone all in on Garoppolo, which might not be a bad idea.

EVEN though it is a small sample size, Jimmy G has been great in the full games that he has played in his young NFL career so far. He was New England’s starting quarterback to begin the 2016 season with Brady was suspended and in his first two games (both wins), he completed over 70% of his passes for 496 yards with four touchdowns and zero interceptions. He has appeared sporadically outside of those two starts, but they remain his only meaningful playing time minutes so far. Heading into a Week 9 matchup with the Cardinals, it’s unclear if Garoppolo will start or see any snaps at all. Regardless, with a 0-8 record right now the 49ers won’t be in any rush to deploy their new weapon and will give him time to learn Shanahan’s offense.

THIS trade could cost Garoppolo a lot of money now that he has to live up to the hype that has been thrown his way for years now. If he can do so then San Fransisco can start to focus on turning the corner and resigning their now new franchise QB. He has been groomed perfectly after spending over three years in a championship enviroment at New England, but now it’s time for him to make some leaps and bounds on the field.
